Logistics doesn't exactly get a bad rap, but you won’t hear it discussed often at parties. In its broadest sense, the term means “the handling of the details of an operation.” Once applied specifically to the military, it has come to be most associated with transport: imports and exports, switchyards, trucks and trains, last-mile connections, inventory and supply coordination, truckers and loading docks – all the components of moving goods from one place to another.

This 14th edition of Georgia Trend’s 100 Most Influential Georgians includes some familiar names, some new to the list and a few that are retuning after an absence. The process of developing the list is, for all practical purposes, a yearlong effort, but the editorial staff of the magazine begins deliberation in earnest in the summer months and comes up with the final slate of names in the late fall – subject, of course, to hirings, firings, retirements and the occasional fall from grace.

Some measure success by salaries and titles. Others use a different yardstick altogether. Take the 10 professionals selected as our 2012 Rainmakers, for example. When asked about their proudest professional accomplishments, three spoke of the rewards of nurturing talent within their organizations and the satisfaction of watching their protégées go on to achieve greater glory. Another cited the opportunity to participate in the resurgence of the freight rail industry.
